Dr Patrick C. Curiel is a French board-qualified specialist in dentofacial orthopedics practising at 109 bis avenue Charles-de-Gaulle in Neuilly-sur-Seine, next to Paris. The Harmony system
Lingual orthodontics, with the appliance bonded behind the teeth, long remained a niche technique. Commercial brackets, designed for the outer surface of the teeth, fitted poorly on an inner surface whose shape changes from one tooth and one person to the next. Fittings were long and results less predictable than with conventional braces.
In 2008 Dr Curiel designed Harmony: a system in which each bracket is manufactured for a given tooth from a digital model of the patient, the wires are bent by robot to the planned final position of the teeth, and the wire is held by a self-ligating clip rather than by ligatures. After three years of development, the system was launched worldwide in 2011 in partnership with American Orthodontics. It has been the subject of 17 patents. Teaching and publications
Since 2011 Dr Curiel has lectured and run certification courses in invisible orthodontics for orthodontists in Japan, Austria, the United States, China and across Europe. He is the author of a publication in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, the reference journal of the specialty, and of a master’s thesis at Columbia University, awarded summa cum laude, on the effect of orthodontic techniques on the facial profile.
Clinical approach
Three principles guide treatment at the practice. First, diagnosis comes before technique: the choice between lingual braces, aligners or conventional braces is made after the assessment, never before. Second, the face matters as much as the teeth: the aim is an aligned smile that respects, and often improves, the profile and the balance of the lips. Third, transparency: the written quote states the expected duration, the fee and what it includes, and at every visit you know where your treatment stands.
Languages and international patients
Dr Curiel consults in English and French. His orthodontic training in New York and the teaching he has given abroad since 2011 mean that English-speaking patients, whether resident in Neuilly-sur-Seine and western Paris or travelling from further afield for lingual treatment, are received in their own language.
